In November of 2019, Nicholas was named Player of the Week by the U.S. Premier Hockey League. That same month a USA Junior Hockey Magazine article had a feature mention of the student-athlete, writing, “Nick Bernstein (’01) leads the entire USPHL Elite in wins, goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts, and was the USPHL Elite South Goaltender Of The Month for both September and October for his efforts.” Nick actually received “Goalie of the Month” awards for 3 months in a row in September, October and November 2019 respectively. Nick finished the season leading the USPHL Elite league in GAA, Save %, Shutouts, and wins.

Head coach, RC Lyke, had this to say about Nick, “Nick is a humble competitor, fantastic teammate and has an unreal work ethic. Nick also became the Generals all-time leader for save %, recording an astounding .949%, which is the highest save % for a season yet by a Generals goaltender in the history of our program.”

A great inspiration for Nicholas is Carey Price, an NHL goalie and is considered to be one of the best goaltenders in the world by many colleagues and fans. Nicholas also admires the Pittsburgh Penguins, a five-time Stanley Cup-winning team that pulled off back-to-back Stanley Cup wins in the 2016 and 2017 Stanley Cup Finals.

Going forward, Nicholas Bernstein aspires to play Division 1 or Division 3 college hockey. Nicholas’ goal for his college education is to major in Sports Management and Marketing, and as an honor roll student, he is familiar with the dedication it takes to seriously pursue academic excellence. Regarding his goals for the upcoming season, he says, “I want to improve myself as a person and player of the game, and I want to improve my overall game as a goalie.” Nicholas also strives to help his team in whatever way is necessary to have a successful season and reach their goals.
